Case Histories & Testimonials

Replacing vinyl tarps and corrosion inhibiting chemicals, Envelop Protective Covers were designed in conjunction with the U.S. Military to protect weapons, electrical components, optics and equipment from the harshest environments. These next-generation covers reduce corrosion by up to 90 percent, maintain ambient temperature to within 10 degrees, and have been tested successfully and deployed extensively by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Coast Guard, and Air Force. But don’t take our word for it:

Overall Function of Envelop Protective Covers

“The most important function of this cover is to wick moisture away from the protected weapon system. By removing moisture under the cover and wicking it away, we dramatically reduce corrosion and the subsequent need to paint and preserve.”

“A cover like this means we have a system maintained in superior condition ready for immediate use by our warfighters.”

USMC Program Manager for Fire Support Systems

Validation on the M777 Howitzers

“These covers [M777 LW 155mm Howitzer] were emplaced on the howitzer without being removed from 12 Dec. 07 through 29 Jan. 08 without any maintenance being performed or the covers being removed. During this time, the temperature varied from 9 to 73 degrees with varying humidity, rain, 35 mph winds, and dirt storms. Upon taking the covers off on 30 Jan. 08, the M777A2 had zero rust which required no maintenance.”

“These covers were very effective and greatly contributed to the howitzers being used for training in a minimum amount of time. ‘Busting’ rust on the M198 generally takes one hour. After removing the Envelop covers, it took less than 10 minutes. Over a longer period of time, the covers would allow us to spend more time training and less time pulling maintenance.”

Effectiveness in Iraq

“Right now, several guns are not being utilized and are covered in the open behind our motor pool. The amount of rust/corrosion is minimal and the protection from the elements is outstanding.”

“The product has worked as advertised and your personal assistance and concern has far exceeded what I could possibly expect.”

Depot Level Cost Avoidance due to Envelop Protective Covers

The US Navy, in FY 2005, contracted to have Envelop Protected Covers produced and delivered for all Mk 38 Mod 1, 25mm gun systems fleet wide. The positive effects of employing Envelop Covers are being recognized by the personnel of the Regional Maintenance Center (RMC) gun shops.

The remaining inventory of Mk 38 Mod 1 gun mounts is not sufficient to permanently install mounts on all of the Cruisers Destroyers and Frigates. The remaining mounts are utilized through a rotating pool system. Each ship, prior to an upcoming operational deployment will have a pair of Mk 38 mounts installed.

The ship operates these guns as force protection, self-defense assets during their deployment. Upon returning to homeport, the mounts are removed and sent to the RMC gun shops for refurbishment and rebuild to be ready for the next ship deployment.

The historical programmed cost to refurbish the gun mounts between installations is approximately $18,000.

The Chief Petty Officer in charge of the Southeast RMC gun shop has reported that guns mounts which were protected by Envelop Covers during the deployment require significantly less corrosion rework than guns using traditional vinyl covers or no covers.

The chief stated that the reduction in rework resulted in less than $5000 in cost to return the gun mount to service. The return on investment for this case is more than 5:1, simply considering the cost of the covers and the reduction in rework. The real ROI is actually higher when the reduction in day to day corrosion maintenance is considered.

SUBJECT: Envelop Covers for Submarine T/D Motors

From: Dave Roy, Component/System Engineer
Sent: Wednesday, May 10, 2006 10:11 AM

I wanted to give you and update on our experience with the Envelop covers produced for the shipment and storage of submarine trim and drain motors.

As you know these are DC motors that have a tendency to absorb moisture from the air as a consequence of having stood idle for a period of time. We have struggled for some time with motors that were delivered to Naval activities with low insulation resistance even though they tested satisfactory prior to leaving our refurbishment vendors.

In searching for packaging solution we discovered that the Envelop technology used on external surface ship applications may be adaptable to our situation. Using the test cover that was supplied by Shield technologies last year, we evaluated it’s effectiveness on a newly refurbished motor sent to fleet activities.

I’m pleased to report that the motor fitted with the test cover had insulation resistance readings of 2000 megohms when receipt inspected at NNSY (similar to post refurb. values). The unit in question had been sent from a vendor in New Jersey to PHNSY in Hawaii to support an Availability. The unit was not used and ended up being shipped to New London and then NNSY to support a recent DMP.

While not originally intended, the extensive travel and various conditions helped in the overall evaluation. We hope for continued success with the production model covers that are now being introduced. Our east coast refurbishment vendor is now directed to fit the covers on all units refurbished and shipped to fleet activities.

We are in the process of updating packaging requirements for our west coast vendor to add similar requirements. We will continue to monitor the successful use of the covers on trim and drain motors and look to look to apply the technology to other electric motor applications in the future.

We appreciate your continued support with our efforts to improve the refurbished rotatable pool products that are delivered to the fleet.

Regards,
Dave Roy
