Biography

Thomas W. Nelson,
General Manager and Chief Operating Officer

(February, 2008) - With more than 25 years of corporate and entrepreneurial experience, Tom Nelson founded Shield Technologies Corporation (Shield) in 2004 to build and market the next generation of protective covers: Envelop® Protective Covers (Envelop). He led all source development, fabrication, production, outsourcing, as well as initial marketing and sales for Envelop. Currently, Tom serves as General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of Shield, which markets to the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Army, international militaries, commercial markets and the U.S. consumer gun owner market.

With Tom's leadership, Envelop covers are replacing vinyl tarps and corrosion-inhibiting chemicals that protect military weapons and other assets from water, ultraviolet rays, humidity, sand, thermal temperature spikes and other environmental hazards. Envelop's patented, four-layer design reduces corrosion by as much as 90 percent compared to other covers. They are environmentally friendly, and by reducing the need for maintenance and repair, Envelop covers improve readiness for the asset and its operators.

Prior to founding Shield, Tom served in a variety of leadership roles developing corrosion protection within the textile industry. He served as vice president of Foldy Pac Protective Solutions, where he was responsible for all corrosion-inhibiting elements for the company and its packaging solutions customers, including John Deere, Arvin Meritor, Nortel and others. Tom also led the vapor corrosion-inhibiting packaging product line (ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 environment) for Cortec Corporation, including global marketing and sales to major companies such as General Motors, Lucent and Xerox. In addition, Tom founded a consumer and industrial tool company. Previously, he served as President and General Manager of one of four domestic manufacturers in a $150 million hardware industry product line, and directed the billion-dollar petroleum planning and finance area of Cenex.

Tom earned both his bachelor's of science degree in Business Administration and M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota. Contact Tom at Shield's office in Eagan, Minn.: 651-289-3067, ext. 101 or Tom.Nelson@envelopcovers.com

About ENVELOP® Protective Covers
Envelop Protective Covers are the next generation of environmental and operational covers, replacing ineffective vinyl tarps and corrosion-inhibiting chemicals that contaminate the environment. Envelop covers were originally developed to protect military weapons and other assets from water, salt, humidity, sand and other sources of environmental degradation. Validated in the Navy's ocean-going environment, Envelop covers have proven to dramatically reduce maintenance time for military assets, and they are the only soft covers approved by the U.S. Navy for topside weapons and equipment. More than 14,000 Envelop covers are now used by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, and allied navies. They are also available for consumer and industrial applications such as oil and gas machinery, commercial shipping, amusement parks, airplanes, gun cases and cruise ships. Shield Technologies Corporation is headquartered in Chicago, Ill., with operations in the Twin Cities suburb of Eagan, Minn.
